Postcards from the Maldives

I just got back from the Maldives and man, am I missing those turquoise waters! The Maldives are an insanely beautiful slice of paradise and I spent a few days there after my work trip in India, since it’s less than a 1.5 hour flight from Bangalore. I’m not writing up a travel guide for this one because to be honest, all I did for my few days there was relax (in my private pool!), read in the hammock on my balcony, and go snorkeling (the diving there is amazing!). A few things I learned about the Maldives that I didn’t know before my trip: The Maldives are its own country in the Indian Ocean, and they have their own language that locals speak, which is Maldivian. It’s made up of tons of teeeeeny tiny islands, called atolls (ring-shaped reefs and islands made of coral). Many of the islands are so small that the only thing on them is one resort.

I stayed at the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa and it was absolutely beautiful. They gave me a gorgeous upgrade to a beach-front cottage, with my own private deck, complete with plunge pool and hammock. It was heaven. The first day I basically hung out there the whole day and only left to get food (which heads up if you’re going to the Maldives, is mediocre and very expensive). I also went out snorkeling by myself just off of the resort’s beach and spotted a bunch of sting rays. If you’re going to the Maldives, definitely book some kind of snorkeling boat trip! I did one out to one of the many reefs about a 30 minute boat ride from the Sheraton and the diving is just insane. There were so many beautiful, brightly colored fish that I’d never seen before and I seriously felt like I was in an aquarium. We also saw a couple sharks which is equally as exciting as it is terrifying (because even though they say black reef tip sharks don’t bit, I’ve definitely seen YouTube videos where that is a false statement). I also saved my Insta Stories from the trip so I could share all of the videos here! I love doing Insta Stories but sometimes it feels like a bummer that they disappear so quickly after 24 hours, so this way they’re a little more immortalized, haha. Let me know if you like this Insta Story vide recap or if I’m ruining the whole point of Insta Stories disappearing. 😉

While it’s kind of a bitch to travel to the Maldives (it took me 30 hours to get back because a flight with two layovers, including a nine hour layover in Seoul, was the shortest option), I’m also kinda dying to go back. I’d love to check out some of the other atolls, so if you’ve been, please send me your recs for favorite places to stay!
