Little Grass Shack

How fun is the print on this Mara Hoffman maxi dress? It feels a little bit like a modern day version of an Egyptian queen’s dress to me. Especially if some of the diamond shapes were replaced with jewels. We shot these photos towards the end of my Maui trip, while we were strolling the grounds of the Hyatt Regency. Our family used to vacation there a lot when we were kids (back when summers were long and PTO wasn’t something we needed to calculate), so it was fun to see all our favorite old hangout spots, including a hidden cave, elephant statues we used to “ride,” and penguins that like warm temperatures. It’s funny how certain smells can bring you back in an instant to a place and time. The hotel still smelled the same—like ocean breeze and coconuts, and a little bit of chlorine from the pool—and it transported me to family vacays circa 2000, racing my sister to the water slide.

When I was a kid on these vacations, I used to tell my dad that I loved Hawaii so much, all I wanted when I grew up was to live in a little grass shack there. I had it all planned out; I’d make money by selling jewelry on the side of the road (I was really into making hemp friendship bracelets at the time), and I’d eat a lot of fresh pineapple. What more could a gal ask for, really? My dad, bless is soul, agreed that this was a great idea. While that hasn’t exactly panned out (yet), this trip to Maui has reminded me why every time I’ve visited the island, I’ve felt an itch to up and move there. While I love living in San Francisco, I still haven’t given up on the idea of some day living in Hawaii (even if for just part of the year) and maybe set my sights a little fancier than a grass shack. 😉
