Why You Need to Shave Your Face: How to Dermaplane at Home

How to dermaplane at home, by beauty blogger What The Fab

I recently shared on my Insta Stories my latest beauty find: Michael Todd’s Sonicsmooth. It’s a tool you use for dermaplaning. And yes ladies, I’m talking about shaving your face. Today I’m diving into why you need to shave your face, and how to dermaplane at home. It’s probably one of my best beauty tips and it’ll change your skincare routine forever!

Dermaplaning is basically the secret to great skin. Celebs like Kim Kardashian swear by it for their flawless skin. And while it originally was something that could only be performed by a dermatologist or medical aesthetician with a scalpel, there are now safe, gentle dermaplaning tools available so you can get the same results at home.

QVC sent me the Sonicsmooth and I’ve been using it once a week for the last month. After the first try, I fell in love. My skin was so soft and smooth immediately after. And the next day when I put on my makeup, I was pleased as punch to see how nicely my foundation laid on my fuzz-free face. Wednesday nights have become my “shave yo face” nights, and I look forward to it so much—it’s so satisfying to get any unwanted hair and that top layer of dead skin off, revealing softer, glowing skin. I’m thinking of kicking my home dermaplaning up to twice a week since my skin has been reacting so well to it.

I received a lot of questions about dermaplaning after I posted about it on my Stories, which I get—shaving your face sounds kinda crazy if you haven’t heard of dermaplaning before!

The most common question I received was, does it make your hair grow back thicker? And the answer is, nope! I did a lot of research on this before trying dermaplaning myself because I was worried about that too, and everything I read said this is an old wive’s tale. At most, when your hair does grow back, it might feel different because the hair was cut straight across, but it’s still the exact same texture as it was before and it’ll grow at the same speed, not any faster than normal. I’ve been watching my peach fuzz carefully during the last month I’ve been dermaplaning and I haven’t noticed any change in thickness.

Ok, let’s get into it! Here’s verything you need to know about how to dermaplane at home.

Why dermaplane at home? Dermaplaning benefits

Removes facial hair. Dermaplaning removes any peach fuzz on your face. I’m not super hairy on my face but I do have some fine hair that is visible, especially since my hair is black. I’ve done laser hair removal treatments on my upper lip, but anyone who has done laser knows that your lip is a really tough area to permanently remove hair—it just keeps wanting to come back. Dermaplaning once a week not only removes any hair on my lip, but my entire face.

Exfoliates and removes first layer of dead skin. Dermaplaning removes that top layer of dead skin cells, revealing softer, glowing skin.

Makes your makeup application better. Since your skin is softer, smoother, and fuzz-free from dermaplaning, the way that your makeup lays after dermaplaning is gorgeous.

Helps your skin absorb serums and moisturizers better. Without a layer of dead skin, the rest of your skincare products are more easily absorbed.

Reduces the appearance of acne scarring: By helping to remove that top layer of dead skin, dermaplaning helps with smoothing out acne scarring.

Gives you smooth, soft, glowy skin. Your skin will be baby soft and feel so smooth afterwards!

Dermaplaning at home saves money: At a spa, dermaplaning costs anywhere from $50 – $100 per treatment.

How to dermaplane at home

Use the right dermaplaning tool: First and foremost, you need to have the right tool for dermaplaning—you can’t just use the same kind of razor you’d use to shave your legs. A couple of years ago I saw some beauty bloggers talking about how they dermaplane with the Tinkle razor, so I bought some and tried them. It completely irritated my skin and my face was so itchy the next day. That kinda scarred me (not literally though!), and I hadn’t tried dermaplaning again until recently, when QVC sent me the Michael Todd Sonicsmooth. This tool is specifically designed to be gentle on your skin. It has a safety edge rather than a regular blade, and it comes with a cleanser and an after serum.

QVC has a great deal going on right now where you can get the Sonicsmooth for $75 (marked down from $100). You can also read the rave reviews and watch the video and dermaplaning tutorial on QVC’s site.

Cleanse your skin: Use a gentle cleanser and then dry your face. You can use the Sonicsmooth on dry skin.

Get to it: Hold the Sonicsmooth in your dominant hand, and use your other hand to pull your skin taut. Holding the blade at a 45 degree angle to your face, use light strokes. You can go back and forth over an area ~3 times and then move on to the next area. Take extra care around any curves like your nose, and don’t use around your eyes or lips. I actually do use the Tinkle razor for removing dead skin on my lips when they’re dry and it works wonders for that specific purpose! If you have any zits or moles, avoid those.

Frequency: It’s recommended to dermaplane at home once per week, but you can go up or down a bit depending on your skin’s reaction. As I mentioned, I’m going to bump mine up to twice a week because I just love it so much and my skin has reacted so positively to it.

Who should be cautious about dermaplaning at home?

Anyone with acne, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, or super sensitive skin should avoid dermaplaning and talk to their dermatologist about it first.

Alright, that’s the scoop on how to dermaplane at home. It’s the best. If you try it, let me know! I promise you’ll be stoked that you did.
