Best Sushi in San Francisco: Omakase at Robin

Robin: Best Sushi in San Francisco

When people ask me for sushi recommendations in San Francisco, I used to kinda draw a blank. That is, before I experienced omakase at Robin. This gorgeous sushi restaurant opened a couple summers ago in Hayes Valley, and you guys, it is such a freakin’ treat. 🍣

Everything about the space is stunning, from the tiled wall behind the sushi bar, to the beautiful plateware that looks like organic shells and coral you would find in the ocean, all sourced by chef Adam Tortosa. Once you step inside, you immediately know this is not a traditional sushi bar. It’s edgy and modern—and so is the menu.

Robin only offers omakase (they used to offer a la carte menus when they first opened, but no more), and the prices range from $89 to $189. The price will depend on how many items you want to eat, and the type of fish. But don’t worry, all you have to do is tell your sushi chef what price range you’d like to spend, and they will create the menu for you. You just sit back, relax, and enjoy every delicious, gorgeous morsel placed in front of you. The flavor combinations are bold and unexpected, like the taro chip with caviar on top, or pumpkin miso soup. And while you’d never find nigiri with truffle butter on top at a traditional sushi restaurant, I’m so very glad I tried it. House-cured roe with cream and uni? I don’t even like uni (usually), but this was so damn delicious.

Some of our fish was from Japan, but many pieces were not. I actually love this because after having visited Japan and having omakase there, I’ve realized that Japan’s absolute best fish stays in Japan and will never make it’s way over here. So why not explore fresh fish that the States and other parts of the world have to offer? And even though I love sushi, the kicker was the last dish—wagyu beef tartare with foie gras shavings on top. 🤤 Again, you’re just not going to find this at other sushi restaurants. We finished with the most delicious coconut soft serve ice cream, and I was in heaven. We absolutely loved our meal at Robin, and if you’re looking for the best sushi in San Francisco for a special night, I can’t recommend Robin enough!
